WHY TATTOOS FADE

Tattoo ink is placed into the dermis layer of the skin, where it is meant to stay long-term - but it is not completely permanent in appearance.
One of the main reasons tattoos fade is the immune system. Special cells called macrophages slowly break down and carry away tiny ink particles over time. Even though most of the pigment stays trapped, this constant process causes gradual fading.
Another major factor is UV exposure. Sunlight breaks down tattoo pigment and damages the skin, which makes tattoos lose contrast and brightness faster, especially in exposed areas like arms, hands, and neck.
Skin aging also plays a role. As the skin regenerates, stretches, and changes texture over the years, the tattoo naturally becomes softer and less sharp.
Friction, lifestyle, and tattoo placement all influence how fast this process happens.
