Over 5,000 years ago, a man known as Ötzi, the Iceman, was discovered with over 60 tattoos on his body.

Scientists believe they were not intended for decoration. Most of the tattoos were located near joints and painful areas, suggesting they were a primitive form of treatment.

Tattoos were made by cutting into the skin and rubbing charcoal into the wounds – a method far more painful than modern tattoo machines.

Some of Ötzi's tattoos even correspond to acupuncture points still used today.
